Vodka, crude oil, meticulously engineered self-stacking dolls: Russia is famous for a lot of things. Floor-filling techno is not one of them. Its a good job, then, that young Russian producer Tesla has never been driven by musical convention. His new EP In Time is a potent reminder that DJs across Europe should be grateful for such deviance.Tesla, real name Filipp Lozovsky, comes from a small town in Russia called Krymsk. His career received its ignition when one of his early tracks was picked up and supported by Spartaque and DJ Bruno. It was the break Tesla had been waiting for. Since then, his progressive approach to techno has inspired a string of successful releases on heavyweight techno labels like Stereo Seven Plus, Neurotraxx and 1605 the label of legendary techno guru Umek. Now Tesla comes to Baptism. Rubber-band rhythms slingshot In Times title track out of the blocks before urgent synths raise the track to rousing levels. The production is surgically precise with artfully crafted breaks. Mechanic percussive elements clatter their way through chameleon musical landscapes that change colour and shift gear unrelentingly. The result is a track that remains deeply immersive throughout its seven minutes, a far cry from the tired ideas that define the genres less inspiring moments.Belteks remix treatment of In Time is tech house wizardry. Gritty, kaleidoscopic synth crescendos provide talon-sharp hooks that will sink deeply into the hearts and minds of all within earshot. Spectral, fierce and mercilessly groovy, its no overstatement to postulate this as the birth of a new dance floor monster.In Time is rounded off with Fucking Conscription; as beautifully brash as its name suggests. Piercing synths and menacing bass lines are yet more evidence of the abiding quality that has seen Tesla become a regular in the charts of leading club music portals like Beatport and Trackitdown. Pioneering techno from a small town in Russia? With Tesla it was only ever a matter of time.
